When choosing ground freight shipping, there are two main options: LTL and FTL freight. Less than truckload (LTL) means that your shipment of goods doesn’t require the whole space of a truckload. Full truckload (FTL) means that your shipment does take up an entire truck’s weight or space capacity.
Both options have their merits, but many companies choose LTL because it’s more cost-effective and doesn’t require large movements of products that may not fill the full space of a truck – such as smaller packages that would require a huge investment to ship FTL.
LTL (LESS THAN TRUCKLOAD)
When you choose LTL, you only pay for the space within the truck that you need. This makes it a much attractive option for many shippers. Typically several companies will share one truckload, splitting the overall cost.
A consideration with LTL, however, can be timing. LTL freight typically makes more stops and drayage, and can take longer than FTL. That’s why it’s important to have a logistics manager in your corner who can find you the best LTL shipping option that will still allow your shipments to meet your deadlines.
FTL (FULL TRUCKLOAD)
When time is of the essence or you have a large amount of product to move, FTL could be a better choice. This option is more costly compared to LTL, but because your product alone occupies the truck, you have more freedom to call the shots. It also is worth considering if you need to move a high-risk shipment.
